Players Boston Bag

The Players Boston Bag was presented to each of the worlds top men's, women's, junior's, wheelchair, and legends players competing at the 2019 Australian Open. As it’s the first of the tennis Grand Slams held each year, we envisaged a piece of luggage that would accompany the players throughout the remainder of the year. Representing the culture and lifestyle unique to the Melbourne event.

As a group, elite male and female tennis players incorporate a wide cross-section of the global community. Therefore, whilst the design direction was specific to Melbourne and The Australian Open, both the aesthetic and functionality needed to be broad and accessible. This required considering only the travel needs and difficulties common to all players as well as accommodating for their differences. The shape started as vintage tennis bag dissected with binding lines. Dimensions of the bag were selected to fit easily into travel compartments. By allowing the handle length to be adjusted it enabled the players to subtly shift the silhouette between masculine and feminine. The Boston was produced in two finishes, a navy sports mesh and a black matte coated fabric.
