Introducing the Carryology Green Guide

Amongst the chaos of Covid 19 you may have forgotten that 2020 was supposed to mark the start of a fight against a different global catastrophe…

2020 was meant to be the first year of the climate decade, the decade in which climate change was our number one challenge. Back in September 2019 Helen Clarkson, CEO of The Climate Group, stated: "Halving global emissions is going to be the story of the next 10 years." At around about the same time, I began planning with the team at Carryology a series of articles addressing the sustainability of the Soft Goods industry. Obviously, neither Helen or I could have had any idea how different the world would look five months later.

Clearly, the story right now isn't climate change, but that doesn't mean we can't make use of this time. As many brands have hit pause on development, now is a rare moment in which we can review our practices as an industry. Or as David Hollis put it, "In the rush to return to normal, use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to."

With all that in mind, we're eager to introduce The Carryology Green Guide. A four-part series tackling what it means to carry sustainably. To begin with, we’ll look at the truth of today’s manufacturing practices and what their impacts are. Then onto how the industry is tackling the problems, from how they measure impacts to how they are addressing them. And finally a practical guide to what you as a consumer can do and what to look for when you’re deciding where to spend your hard-earned, in the hope of being part of the solution.

We'll be updating the links below as new articles are released.

part 1 - Sustainable Glossary

part 2 - The Life Cycle of a Backpack

part 3 - How Brands Are Working Towards Sustainability

part 4 - How To Make Better Choices
