A range of bags designed and developed by Soft Serve Studio in collaboration with Byron-based brand URTH. At the core of URTH's design practice is the principle of minimalism as a path to a more sustainable lifestyle. Equally important is their belief in the power of photography. This collection merges these two ideals, creating a series of camera bags that offer photographers a minimalist solution for carrying and protecting their gear that, in turn, is a more sustainable design solution.
The collaboration between the teams allowed each to leverage the other's strengths, expanding the possibilities both creatively and technically. The result is a final collection of three deceptively simple bags, crafted from Econyl, a regenerated recycled nylon. Each style is designed to serve multiple purposes, from everyday use to specialised camera protection, extending their usability and reducing the need for multiple products. The simplicity of the bags ensures they are timeless and versatile, reducing the frequency of replacement and thereby minimising environmental impact.
We considered how to strip back the traditional approach to camera bags to find the point at which they become universally functional, able to be used for everyday tasks, while still providing the necessary protection for cameras through optimised design. The clean exterior ensures that these bags can function as both work and photo bags without appearing overly specialised. Internally, protective layers have been strategically placed to provide protection where needed, this protection has been stripped back and softened in other areas to create a natural drape. This project highlights how thoughtful, minimalist design can meet both functional needs and sustainability goals, offering a more responsible choice for photographers and everyday users alike.
